Access for all is a key goal
Access for all to the Information Society is a key goal for the European Union. With increasing use of the World Wide Web – in particular for government information and services, it is essential to secure access for all citizens. Yet many people - especially those with a disability – meet barriers.
Benchmarking can locate potential barriers and fuel the development towards Internet access for all.
A demonstrator for large scale accessibility benchmarking
The project has established a technical basis for a demonstrator of a European Internet Accessibility Observatory. The distributed system consisting of 4 servers can process 100 web sites per day according to 31 of the automatable tests specified in UWEM 1.2,

EIAO newsletters.
EIAO in final phase
The EIAO project is now in the final reporting phase and the final review will be carried out in the end of May.
EIAO continued
The EIAO results will be continued in a the eGovMon project co-funded by the research council of Norway.
Two papers to be presented at the ICCHP.
The EIAO project will present two papers at the ICCHP conference in Linz, Austria in July. The titles of the papers are: Monitoring Accessibility of Governmental Web Sites in Europe, and The Unified Web Evaluation Methodology (UWEM) 1.2 for WCAG 1.0.
Unified Web Evaluation Methodology (UWEM)
The first prototype is now completed, and the first large scale evaluation results will be available in June 2008.
The Observatory implementation is based on UWEM 1.2 and covers 31 of the tests that can be automated. The methodology describes how the tests are designed and how the scores are computed.
